Audience feedback

1. 1. Who are the audience? Are they the group you initially targeted? My targeted audience was males and females aged 16-25 who listen to R&B and Hip-Hop. I got a few comments from other students and they said: Landis: “your magazine looks like it is mainly aimed at males, this is because it the front cover image consist of three females that look attractive and are engaging with the reader by looking at them”. Naomie : “I would say that your magazine is aimed at females in there mid – 20’s probably because the images in the magazine are female dominated”. 2. How are particular social groups represented- fans of particular music, age groups, defined by social class /gender / ethnicity..? Are these representations positive, negative, mixed? Vybz’s magazine mission is to show and value the positive features of hip hop and RnB music, it is made to inspire and influence the society with the urban movement as well as trend setting. It also highlights the success of black artists and females. Naomie: “people of a black ethnicity are represented in your magazine (front cover). However if you had added images of males somewhere in your magazine, for example contents page, it would be slightly clearer that you magazine is aimed at both males and females”. 3. Which elements of the magazine does the audience like? Cheyanne: “one element I really liked about your magazine is the photography. This is because it looks professional for example on the contents page; the images match up with the titles” naomie: “ I liked the fact that the teasers contained interesting information to keep the audience appealed so that they could continue to read through the other pages”. 4. What could be improved? Landis: “overall, I think your magazine was done at a good standard and looks professional, however the front cover would look better with a few more teasers on the left.” Stacey: I think you should have added more colour to your contents page as it looks to plain also the contents pages seems as it don’t have enough writing. 5. Looking back at feedback you received from the college magazine, how do you feel your technical and creative skills have developed? I personally think that my skills have improved and develop using Photoshop and InDesign. When I started of I didn't know much about some of the software’s I used to create my college magazine, now I feel more confident about what I am doing and can achieve my target idea.

Magazine Propsal

Objective

VYBZ's objective is to serve a Hip-Hop and R&B fans the latest information about upcoming artists. It will also get music producers and music labels to discover new talent on from the magazine.

The title of my publication will be VYBZ which is related to people who are music freaks. I had created other names for magazine such as:
Sound

      Voice

-   DOPE (a form of colloquial language)

·         VYBZ

I chose VYBZ as it’s different and creative in compare to other magazine mast heads. I wanted a name that will appeal to young people and possibly make up a new slang word that will start a new trend. I used this word as it sounds like a word that the black community will use.

Chosen Musical Genre

My chosen music genre is Hip house,Rap, Grime, RnB etc,  which is mixture of house music and hip-hop. This is a new type of genre which has a growing popularity in the United States in the early 2010s.The style rose to prominence during the 1980s in New York and Chicago. The type of artists I will include in my magazine will be Azealia Banks, Queen Latifah, Fast Eddie, ChrisBrown, Stooshie etc In my magazine will add updates of recent interviews of music artists.

What makes my magazine different?

I wanted my magazine to be unique from others expect the fact that there isn’t a music magazine. First, I had wanted my magazine to be different by, including information of music sensations and most viewed artists on youtube within the genre, however anyone people can find out the most viewed acts on youtube act by looking at their homepage. Research on that idea, I had changed my mind about it and thought that I can make my magazine different by providing information of upcoming artists.I will also provide their information so that people can check their music out on sites, for example Youtube which is the most well known video sharing site to discover new talent.

Design Features

The design features that may be used in my magazine:

Semiotics – semiotics include denotation and connation.

Denotation will give the audience an obvious meaning (what you can see)

Connation will have a hidden meaning (symbology)

A large and bold mast head which can be seen from a long distance – if the mast head or front cover can be seen from a long distance, it can grab the audience’s attention to go closer to the magazine to see what’s interesting about the magazine that caught their eye.

Images will be on the front cover, contents page and double page spread. There should be a form of constancy, whether it’s the size of the images used, font size and colour scheme. There will be a colour scheme inside the magazine, preferably the colours used in the primary colour wheel. Using a colour scheme shows a form of professionalism, it serves a mean of communication medium. A colour scheme also helps improve presentation and advertisement.

The publishing company

A well suited publisher would be Bob Guccione’s company, who publish Spins’ magazine. The company publish different types of genres due to the fact of their previous genre they used to publish.

Target Audience

I had done research on the magazines Rolling stones and Spin about their target audience and their popular age group that reads their articles. The most popular age group that read their magazine is from 16- 25.

I’m going to aim my magazine at both genders and at middle class people who are able to buy the magazine and who are more likely to buy it

Local News stand

This image is of a news stand at local news agent near where i live. This image consist both children’s magazines and adult’s magazines. The layout for a genre is completely different. For the children’s magazines the layout of magazines consist of a free  freebies as clearly shown on the image . This will draw the attract the attention of customer and buyers urge  them to buy it. Also for the children’s magazines they have used bright colours. The titles of the magazines are short and big so it’s easy to remember and read. The children’s magazines have also been put at the bottom so it’s easier for them to see and reach. For the adults magazines they have been placed higher so they can get a direct view of them these magazines look more sophisticated. The magazine has big and bold letters so it’s easy and eye catching. The magazines have got all the famous celebrities images on them. The magazines layout is in the left third this is where the left third of the magazine is shown. This is where the cover lines/taglines are places also the image is more towards the left side so its clear to see whom the magazines will be about.

Distributions

Magazine distribution is a delivery to centers  The method works on what is know as "sale or return",which the distributor gives a set number of magazine to the store, the remaining magazines are returned to the distributor without any cost at all. It is a risk free and attracts prospect to the retailer, but consequences to this method can be very costly and waste a large amount of resources such as ecological  costs. online magazine subscriptions, or 'ezine' are cost effective, and doesn't require the cost of sale and return as well as being instantly available to the buyer. Other means of distribution is subscription via tablet devices such the Kindle Fire, or Apple product such as ipad, iphone or ipod touch, they allow access to exclusive apps New! OK! ELLE, Cosmopolitan.

School Magazine Evaulation

One of my individual tasks was to create my own front cover and contents page for a college magazine. Once I had completed the task, I was able to analyse my strengths, weaknesses and what I need to improve on.

What went well?

I did well at the photography, arranging the magazine features on the front cover and research.I had taken this image using a Canon 600D.The photograph came out clear and I was pleased with how the photograph came out.  As part of my plan for the front cover I wanted to add an anchorage. An anchorage adds meaning. E.g. an image that relates to the texts. The text for my anchorage was “ Are you dressed for the job”

What I did well at - Researching

I did some research on what college magazines contain in their contents page and what they have on the front cover. As any other college magazine, they always have a photograph of the student as the front cover – the student is taken from a medium shot (from the waist up), the student looking towards the audience, smiling to give a warm feeling and appeal the audience. If the model isn’t looking to the camera /audience then there will normally be an anchorage to relate to the models actions.

What went well: Arranging the magazine features

I learnt to name and analyse magazine features, especially the main features included. In my magazine I included, an anchorage, barcode and teasers. I arranged the page so that the teasers are on the right hand side and the anchorage is on the left hand side near the image. I only had three sections on my front cover because I didn’t want to make the front over crowed with text. I had made the heading large so that it was easy for viewers for read and make the magazine stand out. I was able to use the space provided, I filled up the pages by adding large images, large text and giving the background a colour. I particular found that the contents page went well as the contents page was presentable. It has all the contents page requirements: subheadings, images and a bold title.

What do I need to improve on?

Completing the task I was able to recognise my weakness through the task. What I need to improve on the most is the placement of adverts. On the contents page, I was confused of where to place the advert – I found this a difficulty as I didn’t want the advert to overlapping anything. For me to avoid me overlapping anything I placed the advert in the middle of the page where there was gap, where it was easier to notice.

Key Points of development.

1.      It is important to have a target audience for your magazine as that it’s relevant to the audience. E.g. if you do a magazine targeted to women, you would do articles or pages about fashion (this is something that women like)

2.      It’s also required to do research on what appeals the audience; this makes it easier on how to grab the audience’s attention. It can be anything from freebies to competition that people may take part in

We over-viewed Photoshop within lesson today. Here are some useful commands i learned to assist me in creating my magazine cover.
  • ·         H selects the hand tool which allows you to navigate around the document without moving anything. Holding the CTRL key allow you to zoom in with this tool, while Alt zooms out. This is particularly useful, as cover image need to be zoomed into, and allows an easier means to erase areas of the masthead from main image.
  • ·         E selects the Eraser tool, which allows you to clear up content, essential in removing overlay masthead from main image.
  • ·         X switches the fore and background colours scheme, along with a background colour, and a general conventional maximum of three.
  • ·         [this command decreases the brush size, including tools such as the eraser, this allows access to more constrained areas with greater ease.
  • ·         ] an inverse of the above
  • ·         Ctrl – 0 fits the document on screen, this is useful to see the cover a whole quickly and efficiently, and as a means to take screenshots, as well as seeing how the product looks like.
  • ·         Ctrl-Alt-Shift-N creates a new layer at the top of command area, magazine covers consist of many layer so this is very useful.
  • ·         Ctrl-Z undoes the later command, a way to remove mistakes. Ctrl-Alt-Z  removes any commands prior.
  • ·         Ctrl – T uses the Free Transform features features of Photoshop, which is often used to change the size for type or images as part of the cover, holding shift when dragging uses the constrain command, which evenly increase or decreases the size of the item, this keeps images and fonts looking professional.
  • ·         F un hides the ruler fuction, this is useful for aligning things and creating margins

Evaulaton

Evaluation

I used the news beat article as my stimulus to get into this induction project. This helped and informed me on how the media work. The stimulus I was given by my teacher help me to highlight areas I need to understand more about and highlighting, annotation the sheet help with research and ideas for my project. I had done all my own independent research using the internet which referred me to websites such as:

Journalistic and Writing Skills

The research information I found out from typical website that I have included above help use a method of selective writing and analysis the way journalist write, this information helped me to write up my own article in a more professional way and I was a challenging piece because it was my first time doing this type of work.

The type of publication format that I chose was a mixture of GQ magazine and Vibe which is a bit of music magazine but that can still have the look of be sophisticated. My target audience is young adults and working people. As I was writing this article I included my own views on the topic of my creative writing and engage with my audience a bit more. I have used first person to show my opinions as a journalists of the topic and shared my views with the reader.

In Design

My previous publishing experience was from using Windows Microsoft Publisher. In Design was a new challenge due to the fact that I have never used this program before, this gave me an opportunity to explore and experiment on this software. The skills I learnt from this was: creating a text box, adding colour to the background, inserting/resizing images, align pages so that the page will have a crease in the middle as if it’s a magazine, margins and creating columns.

Finishing producing my magazine I was able to analyse my weakness and strengths.

Web Publishing

For me to be able to submit my work I had to setup a blogger account on Google mail which I already had. I had to export my magazine into a JPEG (an image file) from InDesign so that I would be compatible to go on my blogger. I had a few problems in upload my work onto blogger  because I the firewalls I had to go through but it was resolved in the end
